More than half the marriages in the UK are now civil, according to new figures.
The National Statistics Office (NSO) said the number of civil marriages in England and Wales stood at 2,086,000, up 5 per cent on the previous year.
The number of marriages in Scotland and Wales, where the civil system is still in place, stood at 7,074,000 and 5 per “cent”, up 4 per cent.
The NSO said that in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, marriages in civil partnerships have remained stable over the past two years.
The figures are likely to be a key element in the Government’s plans to introduce a same-sex marriage bill in the Commons.
The statistics also showed that the proportion of people who said they would be happy with their partner’s sexuality has risen to 60 per cent from 55 per cent in 2011.
In England and Northern Irish the proportion rose to 61 per cent, but was unchanged in Scotland.
However, in Wales and Scotland, the proportion remained the same at 59 per cent and 57 per cent respectively.
Mr Farage told the BBC: “It is about time that this country became more accepting of the fact that gay couples want to get married, and that’s a fact, and the statistics prove it.”
If you don’t want to have children, and want to marry someone who wants to get your children, then the next thing you want to do is say ‘well, I’m not going to be happy if you have kids.’
“The survey showed that a record 6,600 gay couples and their partners applied for a civil partnership licence in England last year.
In 2011, 4,400 people applied.
In Scotland, more than half of the applicants were men, while in Wales, only 3 per cent of applicants were gay men.
The UK Statistics Authority said that of the 4,500 applications received in 2011, about 1,300 were accepted.
Mr Cameron said: “This is a very good indication of what’s going on in our society.
“We’re getting there.
It’s not going anywhere.
The fact is that in our country it’s still not legal and we’re still a long way from that.”
